Linda McQuaig
Linda McQuaig is the recipient of a National Newspaper Award for investigative reporting and a Toronto Star columnist. She is also the author of eight national bestsellers, including Shooting the Hippo, selected by the Literary Review of Canada as one of the twenty-five most influential books of the past twenty-five years. Her most recent book, written with Neil Brooks, is Cancelling Billionaires Before They Cancel Us: The Urgent Case for a Wealth Tax.

Miriam Edelson
Miriam Edelson is an independent researcher, writer/editor and settler living in Toronto, Canada. She worked in the Canadian labour movement for thirty years specializing in communications and human rights. She then earned her doctorate at University of Toronto focussing upon mental health in the workplace and the role of unions. Edelson is a former board member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women, a feminist think tank that studies and advocates on a number of issues, including the rise of regressive movements. Edelson is the editor of Confronting the Resurgent Right, her fourth book.

Neil Brooks
Neil Brooks is professor emeritus at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. For more than 40 years, he taught tax law and policy at Osgoode and served as the director of its graduate program in taxation. He has published extensively on issues related to tax law and policy and has been an advisor on tax policy and tax reform to numerous governments around the world.

He worked to counter foreign interference for over a decade in both Ottawa and in Edmonton with Canada’s security and intelligence community. He first started writing about Canada-US relations twenty years ago, and has a PhD in political science from the University of Toronto. He’s a frequent contributor to The Walrus.

The years following the 2016 election of U.S. President Donald Trump gave rise to the global mainstreaming of hate, as false narratives and conspiracy theories about equity and inclusion, immigration, COVID-19 and vaccinations, the “gay agenda”, and more became permissible talking points among right-wing politicians, pundits and influencers.
In Confronting the Resurgent Right, scholars and activists take Canada’s 2022 so-called “Freedom Convoy” as a recent manifestation of deep-rooted extremism and provide intersectional commentary on the resurgence of the political right, demonstrating how its ideology permeates and shapes the structures of our society.

On Treason is the extraordinary tale of how Alberta has come to have a referendum vote on the province’s future within Canada.
The stakes could not be higher. The Alberta Separatists claim to have collected enough signatures on their petition to force a referendum this fall on whether the province should cease to remain part of Canada. But this isn’t an organic political movement founded in genuine grievance. This is a plot to end Canada by a nefarious group of individuals tied to the global far right.
Framed as an investigation into the treasonous nature of this separatist movement, On Treason explains how the movement has been aided and abetted by foreign actors and disinformation in an attempt to fracture the remaining liberal democracy in North America. This treasonous course has not only been marked and furthered by foreign interference, it has been spurred on and enabled by a Provincial Government more aligned with the Trump Administration than with its own Federal counterparts.
By situating the story in the revolutionary geopolitical context of a collapsing rules-based international order, and the US’s quest for hemispheric domination as articulated in its National Security Strategy, On Treason is about a referendum as much as it is about Canada’s survival.
