Come chat about the early stages, challenges, and adventures of independent magazine publishing with Xavier Snelgrove (Orbital Studies) and Isaac Nikolai Fox (Lore Magazine) and hosted by Nicola Hamilton of Serviette. Isaac Nikolai Fox (he/him) is an editorial and creative director, as well as the founder of Lore Magazine, where he leads a team of 30+ creatives. Outside of Lore, he works for a data analytics firm as a Brand Manager, and does fractional creative work for other U.S. clients in the health tech and non-profit spaces.

Nicola Hamilton RGD (she/her) is an award-winning editorial designer and founder of Issues Magazine Shop. She jokes that she’s best known for her delusional optimism about the state of Canadian media—and print magazines specifically. But that’s not actually far off: part connector, part cheerleader, part community builder, her professional life revolves around championing creative industries and people. For over a decade she’s been art directing and designing publications like The Grid, Chatelaine, The University of Toronto Magazine, Best Health, Precedent, and Serviette.

Xavier Snelgrove
Xavier Snelgrove wants to better understand the world. His career has spanned academia and industry, the arts and the sciences, always working to build conversation between different perspectives and philosophies. As Editor in Chief of Orbital Studies, he is stewarding a world which stubbornly rejects the idea that art, science, and philosophy can exist independently of one another, and seeking the others who know this to be true. He lives and works in Toronto.

Est. in 2023, Lore is a culture and photography magazine that publishes original editorial shoots and cheeky stories. Each issue tackles a specific theme, whether that’s cults, daddies, secrets or clubs. Lore was named 2026 Magazine of the Year and Best Magazine: Art, Culture and Literary by the National Magazine Awards, and shortlisted for design and photography awards by the Society of Publication Designers. We’re distributed on three continents, and we also throw great parties.
Orbital Studies
Orbital Studies is a literary science magazine. We publish writing and art in service of a more beautiful scientific culture.
Our inaugural issue features scientists, philosophers, poets and artists exploring questions of the living world. What separates living matter from our creations? Meaning, purpose, and agency were once scientific taboos—why are biologists now grappling with them? Why do we believe that the world might be knowable to us at all?
Serviette Magazine
Serviette is a magazine about food: the people who grow and produce it, the distances we travel to eat it, and all the ways it’s tangled up with culture, science, history, and design. Since launching, Serviette has been recognized for its bold storytelling and confident design. This year alone, Serviette has been named Best Magazine: Service & Lifestyle by the National Magazine Awards, Best of the Genre: Independent from the Society of Publication Designers in New York, and earned a spot on the shortlisted at the D&AD Awards in London.
